At the center of the great Oltenian plain, Craiova (235,000 inhabitants), the former Roman Pelendava, is an important industrial and cultural center, with a large university. For foreign visitors, it's primarily a stopover on the way to the Iron Gates, Târgu Jiu or Bulgaria. But it can be a pleasant stopover, with its attractive pedestrianized historic center, a few old mansions, beautiful parks and lively evenings. Its main attraction is its art museum, housing major works by Brâncuși.Transportation. Direct trains to Bucharest (3h20 to 3h50 journey time). Craiova airport: direct flights to Charleroi in particular.
