When Christopher Columbus landed in 1494, the river where he quenched his thirst was named Río Bueno. The village developed around a port activity during the colonization and the prosperity of the plantations. But as everywhere on the island, its importance decreased with the fall of sugar and banana prices and the disappearance of the big exploitations. Nowadays, Río Bueno is a small and sleepy fishermen's port, welcoming the rare tourists who are looking for authenticity, away from modernity. Two churches, one Anglican, the other Baptist, the ruins of an 18th century fortress, Fort Dundas, are all witnesses of a bygone era.
