Two miles inland from Falmouth, the little hamlet retains nothing of the former capital of the parish of Trelawny. The river took its name from an Arawak princess who held the secret to the location of a gold mine. Legend has it that she lured the Spanish conquistadors into a cave along the river and then diverted the river to imprison and drown them. The Martha Brae rises at Windsor Caves and flows east of Falmouth into Oyster Bay. The river can be floated down in a bamboo raft from Rafters Rest, where there is a parking lot
