38 km from Montego Bay, the former commercial capital of the island, which had its heyday in the 18th century, is today a quiet little town that is very lively on Wednesdays, market day. The city is not necessarily worth a visit. Of its prestigious past remain some treasures of Georgian architecture, old embarkation docks, and the charming parish church in Saint-Peter's stone, built in 1785 and enlarged in 1842 with a small cemetery that slumbers in the shade of flamboyant trees.Ambitious restoration projects plan to make Falmouth a stop on tourist routes. The filming of the movie Papillon with Steve McQueen was an opportunity to rehabilitate some of the buildings. Unfortunately, a more complete restoration requires large budgets that are overdue. In the meantime, every year, bad weather damages more and more the old historical buildings. An example of this neglect is the 1810 Phoenix Foundry at the corner of Thorpe and Lower Harbour, of which only ruins remain.
