Discovery Bay, Puerto Seco by its first name, is the place where Christopher Columbus first arrived in Jamaica in 1494, during his second voyage. Discovery Bay has since become a thriving tourist centre, very popular with Jamaicans. A large open-pit bauxite mine is located at the exit of the village. The marine loading dock and the ships that dock in the bay spoil the landscape of this idyllic postcard. Discovery Bay beach is still nice and you can enjoy delicious lobsters and shrimps or grilled fish.
