Leaving Ocho Rios to the west, one passes a bauxite mining area and the ore loading port, connected to the open pit by a funicular. The capital of the parish of the same name, Saint Ann's Bay is a charming, quiet little town off the beaten path, with few resources to keep the visitor away for long. A quick tour will allow you to feel the pulse of this commercial town and to see some of the old buildings in the center, if you want to linger on two statues.Once an active port, the city was partly built in the 18th century with elements from New Seville, blocks of carved stone, wooden structures, decorative architectural elements. A fort, later transformed into a prison, protected it from maritime attacks. Following the revolt of 1831, the city saw the birth of a reactionary movement that hunted down abolitionists.Saint Ann boasts the birthplace of Marcus Garvey, an activist for the black cause and the emancipation of African-Americans in Jamaica, considered the prophet of Rastafarianism (and nicknamed the Black Moses), but also the talented reggae singer Burning Spear.
