STATUE OF MARCUS GARVEY
Bronze statue in downtown Saint-Ann commemorating politician and activist Marcus Garvey.
In front of the Saint-Ann library, a bronze statue commemorates the politician, activist, journalist and orator of the black cause, Marcus Garvey. A hero of the emancipation of African-Americans in the USA in the early 20th century, of which Jamaica is proud to be the cradle, he laid the foundations for the religious precepts of Rastafarianism and the precept of returning to Africa. His birthplace, now in ruins, can be seen from the outside. The statue bears the dates of his life and death (August 17, 1887 - June 10, 1940).
