When leaving St. Agricultural, you can reach a region of high plateaus where you can feel more about the Rhine at the bottom of the valley. After Waldshut, Laufenburg and its clochers, you can reach the pretty little town of Bad Säckingen. This spa resort of about 17 000 inhabitants is a popular holiday resort, but prices are often excessive. The history of Bad Säckingen dates back to the foundation by Saint Fridolin of a missionary cell around 522. The Benedictine monastery has for centuries governed the destiny of the city. In 1173, the monastery and the small town fell into the hands of the Habsburg and remained Austrian until 1805. The curative properties of hot springs for motor disorders were recognized only in 1978, when the city was finally named Bad (bath).
