Officially founded in 1248, Aarau (population 22,000) was Switzerland's first capital (from March to September 1798) and the administrative center of the canton of Aargau. Aarau still boasts a historic old town center, making it a pleasant place to stroll along its cobbled streets, lined with numerous historic buildings with beautiful painted eaves, the Dachhimmel.Rue In der Halde is surely the most typical of the old town, with a very homogeneous group of houses, including the former women's convent of Sainte-Ursule (13th century). A little further on, an austere silhouette of exposed stone: the Turm Rore, a vestige of the fortifications.
