Things to see and do Freiburg Im Breisgau

These are small parallel alleys along the canal, south of the university and west of the Schwabentor. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city center, immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the city's most picturesque old districts. The houses bordering these alleys were occupied by tanners and fishermen who gave them their names. In medieval times, these two professions that needed large quantities of water had settled beside the creek for more convenience. Today, these pedestrian alleys are among the most beautiful in the old town and make tourists happy, happy to dive back in the past.

This museum presents treasures from the 900 years of history of the city, its foundation in baroque times. Here you will find the models of the city and a model of the cathedral showing the reconstruction of the Romanesque choir.

The oldest theater in Freiburg opened in 1910 in the middle of the famous Bertoldstraße. It suffered a lot during the Second World War and was restored and rebuilt in 1984. Discover Freiburg's Wasserschlössle. Perched above the Wiehre district in the Sternwald, this water tower, hidden since 1895, offers an enchanting view of eastern Freiburg. Like the legendary Bächle, the water flows naturally to the home. Inspired by the seal of 1245, the Wasserschlössle is a feat of engineering. Sip fresh water at the fountain, before enjoying spectacular views from the summit. It's well worth the climb! An experience that transcends traditional fairy tales.

The historic French department store is one of Freiburg's key buildings. It is located south of the famous Münsterplatz (where the Münstermarkt is held). The building is impressive, with its striking red façade, 4 arcades and Gothic-style towers immediately catching the eye. Sculptures of Emperors Maximilian ^I, Charles V, Ferdinand ^I and King Philip the Fair can also be seen. Today, its main function is to host various events and exhibitions.

Explore the mystery of the Dreisamschaukel, a swing suspended between Schwabentorbrücke and Kaiserbrücke. Its origin is as bewitching as the experience of swinging your feet over the undulating Dreisam. Hanging mysteriously on the Mariensteg, this swing requires wet feet and a dose of balance on slippery stones. Who came up with the idea remains a mystery, but the Dreisamschaukel is recognized as the city's most beautiful swing.

Notre-Dame Cathedral, located in the city's center, is the city's most characteristic monument and impresses with its size and Gothic architecture. It was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and is one of the rare buildings to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. What to discover is the Gothic bell tower, which is 116 meters high. It is possible to climb the 400-step staircase that leads to the viewing platform to admire the panorama of Fribourg.

Münsterplatz is located opposite Notre-Dame Cathedral in Fribourg. This picturesque square has many colorful buildings, most of which were rebuilt at the end of the Second World War. In addition to the church, you will find the historic Kaufmannshaus and the Wentzingerhaus. Don't forget to watch where you step as you stroll across Münsterplatz, as the streets are lined with streams, open drains. If you walk in one of these little streams, you will one day marry a citizen of Freiburg im Breisgau (according to legend)

The Feierling brewery is one of the oldest breweries in Freiburg. It was founded in 1877 near Augustinerplatz. On entering the two-storey building, you will immediately notice two huge copper brewing screens on the first floor, while wooden tables are set up on the first and second floors. In summer, Freiburg locals visit the pub's garden to enjoy freshly tapped beer and pretzels all day long. The specialty is Inselhopf, a clear and unfiltered pilsner.

This house shows you the costumes and grimacing masks of the local carnival (the Fasnet), which you also tell history. Shame that it is so rarely open.
