Mannheim is Baden-Württemberg's second-largest metropolis, but of limited tourist interest. However, the city, whose original grid layout dates back to the 17th century, is dotted with a number of sights: the castle, now the seat of the (important) university, the water tower on a superb square, the nearby Rosengarten , an imposing congress center, and the well-landscaped Luisenpark, a paradise for children and animals. After the devastation of the Second World War, Mannheim was redeveloped in the American style, so that the streets in the center of the city bear not names, but letters and numbers: N1, A3, U6... quite disconcerting!
