Founded by the Loyalists around 1780, it is now the largest city on the peninsula in terms of area and is its industrial center. Despite this, it has retained its original character as evidenced by the locks of the Welland Canal. The Welland Canal crosses the peninsula from St. Catharines to Port Colborne. Lock No. 3 in St. Catharines houses an interpretive center and its observation deck is a great place to see ships from around the world up close. This charming city is also an interesting cultural center with art galleries, museums and festivals awaiting visitors.
