An important industrial, cultural and tourist hub, the city owes its name to the Marquis of Granby (a city in England), Duke of Rutland and Baron of Belvoir, owner of a vast territory offered to him by King George III. It is the second most populous city in the Eastern Townships, after Sherbrooke. Granby is well known for its animal park, the Granby Zoo, as well as for the Festival international de la chanson, a competition dedicated to young people that takes place annually in August. The Yamaska National Park is also located nearby and offers many outdoor activities in all seasons.
