Nicknamed the "City of Fog", this large industrial port developed at the mouth of the St. John River in a region of steep hills. As early as the 17th century, a French fur trading post was established here, which became English after the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Then, in 1783, 4,000 Loyalists who refused to accept the independence of the United States landed here. They succeeded in creating a prosperous city whose economy, until the 19th century, was essentially based on shipbuilding. Its port still plays an important role in the economy of the Maritimes. The ferry to Digby, Nova Scotia is located there.
