With just over 3,000 inhabitants, Calais is one of the least populated cities in the state. On the border with Canada, it is separated by the St. Croix River. Moreover, if you wish to travel to Canada by land, you should know that Calais has 3 points of entry for the province of New Brunswick. The town is home to the island of St. Croix, about 1 mile offshore, which is probably the main reason to travel to the area. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public, but you can visit the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site to learn more about its history. The island was declared an International Historic Site in 1984
