Together with the American Glacier National Park, it forms the UNESCO-listed Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. F.W. Godsal, a rancher from southwestern Alberta, took the first steps towards its preservation. In 1893, he submitted a proposal to Ottawa recommending that the Waterton Lakes area be incorporated as a national park. The park encompasses the southern Rocky Mountain natural region, where the prairie meets the mountains abruptly and contains more than half of Alberta's plant species. The park contains two national historic sites: the Prince of Wales Hotel and the first oil well in Western Canada.
