It is the fourth most populous and third largest city in Alberta. Lethbridge has grown from a mining town in the 1870s to become the centre of a rich agricultural and livestock region. A grain and pulse producer, the city was founded in 1906. This region of southwestern Alberta benefits from a microclimate created by a warm Pacific wind that crosses the Rocky Mountains: the Chinook - also a species of salmon. The city overlooks the banks of the Oldman River, which can be crossed by the Lethbridge Viaduct, also known as the High Level Bridge. Opportunities for nature sports are popular with visitors.
