This is the main seaside resort in Region VI. Situated 250 km south of Santiago, it's a popular and busy little place, renowned around the world among surfers for its beautiful waves, sometimes reaching up to 9 m in height. A round of the world surf and stand-up paddle championships is held here, on the beaches of Punta de Lobos and Infiernillo. Pichilemu retains traces of an aristocratic past dating back to the second half of the 19th century, when Don Augustin Ross Edwards undertook to bring in the railroad to boost production in the Colchagua valley, and to build a summer resort on the European model.
