This town, known as one of the oldest in Chile, is now dedicated to agricultural and forestry activities. Cañete has a rich historical past: it was a region densely populated by the Mapuche Lafkenches (people of the coast), and the municipality pays tribute to this culture that is still alive. Cañete was also a strategic landmark on the route of the Conquistadores from the Concepcion, and many historical events took place there: the battle of Tucapel, which opposed the Mapuche to the Spaniards and in which Valdivia died, and even part of the Pacific War.
