Curicó, whose name means "black water" in Mapudungun, was founded on October 9, 1743 by José Manso de Velasco. Today, its economy revolves around the agro-industry and it serves as a tourist stopover for travellers visiting the surrounding vineyards. The highlight of the town is its great Harvest Festival. Held during thethird week of March, it lasts three days and is an opportunity to get acquainted with the local criolla (Creole) culture. Curicó is a rather rich city, with a colonial past, a beautiful central square and a very welcoming population. A pleasant surprise, after all.
