17 km from Dharamsala. The former capital of a powerful kingdom is famous for its magnificent temples and fort. The Vajreshwari temple was so rich that, over the years, invaders systematically attacked it in the hope of plundering it. Mohammed of Ghazni sacked it in 1009. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1905, it was rebuilt in 1920. The temple's three domes symbolize Hindu, Sikh and Muslim architecture. It is a major pilgrimage site, where devotees come dressed in yellow. The left breast of the goddess Parvati is said to have fallen here after her sati (immolation at the stake).
