Dalhousie is located 120 km from Dharamsala, in the Chamba district. It is nestled on and around five mountains: Kathlag, Patryn, Terah, Bakotra and Balun. It was in 1854 that the British East India Company established Dalhousie as a resort. This city located at an average of 1 950 m of altitude, preserved a certain charm of the colonial time. It is named after a former Governor General of India, James Dalhousie. One of the oldest Tibetan communities settled in India found refuge here. Arriving shortly after the exile of the Dalai Lama in 1959, there are now more than 1,200 of them. Dalhousie is a haven of peace, ideal for resting. Hiking enthusiasts will find much to enjoy here.
