Kapurthala was the capital of a princely state, it owes its name to its founder Rana Kapur, native of Jaisalmer (11th century). Most of the buildings that we can admire today are the work of Jagatjit Singh, who became maharaja in 1890. A convinced Francophile who traveled a lot, he often called upon French architects, notably to build his palace. Shalimar Bagh, gardens designed according to the model of those of Versailles, shelter cenotaphs of the royal family. There was a time when Kapurthala was even nicknamed the "Paris of Punjab". Today it is a village that can be a day trip.
