This is THE spa resort of the Algarve. The village lies below the road leading to Monchique. It has a peaceful, timeless atmosphere: lush vegetation, typical buildings, small chapel... A dozen springs feed the streams from the summit of the Serra. Regarded in legend as a love fluid, Monchique's thermal water (which emerges at 32°C) is sweet-tasting, carbo-gaseous, sulfated and rich in fluoride, and is recommended for respiratory tract ailments. Since the 15th century, the Portuguese have been coming here to cure all their ailments. In 1495, the resort welcomed King João, who came to treat his rheumatism.
