This ancient city was once called Scalabis Castro by the Romans. Invaded by the barbarians from Iran and the Vandals, it was renamed Santa Irene. Taken by the Moors in 715, it became Xantarim, a strategic fortress city of the kingdom of Portugal in 1147, during the reconquest of the city. From the viewpoint of Porta do Sol, in the ruins of the old castle, there is a beautiful perspective of the vast green meadows where bulls and thoroughbred horses graze and where they will bulge their torso in the famous touradas. It is an interesting historical stage even if the new town is not very pleasant.
