We soon reach Zaandam (10 km from Amsterdam), the capital's industrial suburb and Zaanstad's main settlement. Although it was famous for its shipyards in the 17th century, there's nothing very attractive about the town today, with just two or three sites of little interest. The town's current population is just under 80,000. The town is home to the famous Zaanse Schans attraction, which attracts some 2 million visitors every year. This is not a museum per se, but an open-access area whose existence and preservation were decided back in the 1960s.
