The municipality originally consisted of the village of Velsen, which is now caught between the freeway and the North Sea Canal, and was once an agricultural community situated between the dunes and the Wijkermeer lake. At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the lagoons formed by the coastal ridges and the ponds were already inhabited. In Driehuis, the oldest crematorium in the country is located in the historic Westerveld cemetery. IJmuiden is the port of the municipality of Velsen, which connects the North Sea Canal to the North Sea. The beaches are very large and attract many tourists from Amsterdam
