Listed as a historical monument, this mining village was restored only to fall into ruin today. In 1873, the gold seeker Alec Patterson found his fortune here. The vein, quickly known, attracted hundreds of adventurers. Theta Mine, the last mine of the Transvaal Gold Exploration Company, was once the richest gold mine in the world. It closed in 1972. Until 1881, the town, which had no less than 1,400 prospectors, had a newspaper, The Gold News, and dozens of businesses. Today, Mineur Land, with its old-fashioned cachet, is on a gentle slope towards commercial ruin; the village seems to have stopped in time.
