Sabie is a small forest town of 10,000 inhabitants named after one of the famous rivers that run through the Kruger Park. In the Tsonga language, ulusaba means "fearful", which is understandable when you see the number of animals that come to drink from it. Surrounded by vast pine and eucalyptus plantations, it is a tourist hub between the Kruger and the Blyde River Canyon. The town grew up around the mines, which produced over 35,000 kg of gold until they closed in 1950. Timber production for pulp began at the turn of the century. To the southwest are Bridal Veil Falls and Lone Creek.
