It was originally a train station on the Pretoria-Lourenço Marques line. In 1894, the route, from Mozambique, crossed the 208 metres of slopes between Onder (under waterfalls) and Boven (above the falls). The feat will have cost many workers the lives. During the Anglo-Boer war, President Kruger established his residence on the domain of the current Wayside Inn. From 30 June to 28 August 1900, national affairs were conducted from here.
