The capital of the Mpumalanga province, renamed Mbombela, owes its name to the brothers Nel, Gert, Louis and Andries, who bought the first farm in the area in 1890. With the extension of the railway and the development of agriculture (one third of the national orange production), Nelspruit became a real economic centre. Situated at an altitude of 619 m in the Crocodile River valley, the weather is always mild: in winter the average temperature is 23°C and in summer 30°C. Nelspruit is not the most attractive city, but it offers cheap accommodation and is a good gateway to the Kruger from the south.
