North-east of Hanoi, the province of Bac Ninh has more than one million inhabitants. It is at the center of a river network which includes the Thai Binh, Câu, Duông and Ngu Huyên rivers. In recent years, the province has experienced accelerated growth, with the establishment of many industrial parks. The province which was formerly part ofKinh Bac (Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces) is considered the cradle of Vietnamese culture. It is notably the birthplace of King Ly Thai Tô, founder of the Ly dynasty and of the capital Thang Long (Hanoi). There is a large number of pagodas, temples and communal houses.
