Located some 100 km east of Hanoi, Haiphong is a stopover on the way to Cat Bà and Halong Bay. It is one of the country's major ports, with a population of over 2 million. Today, it is the country's largest concentration of cement factories, shipbuilding, petroleum derivatives and metal fabrication... This explains why the atmosphere is so unpleasant and the skies so low and heavy, due to pollution that takes its toll on the throat.
