Between Palekastro and Zakros (17 km), the road is very picturesque. Zakros is like many villages, divided in two: Ano Zakros at the top and Kato Zakros at the bottom, separated by less than 8 km. Zakros owes its fame to its valley and the Minoan site of the same name located in a beautiful bay with a beautiful beach. In season, the numerous buses of tourists coming from Ierapetra, Sitia or Agios Nikolaos cross without stopping Ano Zakros for the Zakros below. The place is striking and very relaxing. It is a long beach, lined with tavernas, cafes, stores and rooms for rent and nothing else. Please note that the rooms and restaurants of Kato Zakros close from November to March. All facilities (grocery store, tourist office, post office, gasoline...) are located upstairs. Bring cash, as there are no ATMs in Zakros. And many establishments do not take credit cards! A very nice hike joins the two parts, with the end of the European hiking trail E4: it is the Death Valley. The site of Zakros is protected, which prevents the development of hotel infrastructures in a defined perimeter. The olive oil of Zakros is famous.
