Not to be confused with the island of the Little Eastern Cyclades which bears the same name. Koufonissi, in the east of Crete, is located off Cape Goudouras, and can be reached from the port of Makri Gialos. This island, which archaeologists call "Little Delos", was inhabited during the post-Byzantine period and, most probably, during the Minoan period. It has a beautiful beach located near the ruins of a Roman theatre. This is where the snails of the species Murex trunculus lived, used at the time to dye the togas of the Roman emperors in purple. During antiquity, Koufonissi was also known for sponge fishing.
