The small town of Ghomrassen was once the political and religious capital of all of southern Tunisia. Some say that Ghomrassen was founded by seven brothers who came to the region in the 16th century. While they had reached the valley of a wadi, one of them had stopped and asked the others to wait until he had dipped his head in the river. And it is this anecdote, ghom rassou in Arabic ("he hid his head"), which would be the origin of the name of this place, which became Ghomrassen. In reality, the word Ghomrassen is composed of two Berber words: ghomr (tribe) and sen (the stallion, the chief). It is the largest Berber village in the region. The village of Ghomrassen is famous for its agricultural wealth and for its military valour, supported by the existence of many fortresses built in the rock! And it is also, from a practical point of view, the most easily accessible by public transport. During your trip, you will also notice the very low and vaulted habitats that protect from the heat, and their white color that reflects the sun rays. The Ibn Arafa mosque is the landmark of Ghomrassen. Known as the tomb of Ibn Arafa, it stands atop a rock. In reality this 14th century multidisciplinary scholar is buried in Tunis, where he was imam of the Zitouna mosque, a local pride. The Thursday market is colorful
