The peninsula of Zarzis, formerly called Zita or Gergis, is planted between sea and desert. With its 75,000 inhabitants, Zarzis lives from fishing, olive growing, trade and tourism. Its fine sandy beaches are among the best in the country and make it an important tourist pole. Its proximity to the island of Djerba (10 km) is a major asset. Its proximity to the desert makes it possible to make excursions towards the Great South. A strategic post in the southern Mediterranean, a safe haven and an essential passage for ships, Gergis (Zarzis) was an important Phoenician trading post in Little Sirte, before coming under the control of Carthage and Rome.
