The remarkable old village of Douiret offers one of the most beautiful views of the Dahar region. This village is composed of houses clinging to the rock, a very special mosque, old ksour and oil presses once driven by camels ... The Ennakhla mosque was dug into the mountain, and remains quite spectacular. Composed of two levels, one is underground, it is the troglodytic prayer room supported by pillars that maintain its ceiling. The second mosque of Douiret is more ordinary, with a white minaret clearly visible, its two naves and its four bays. Douiret would originally be the name of a Berber tribal community scattered in several localities, the main village and twenty hamlets "pitonniers". Ghazi Bou Kenena (who came from Morocco in the 14th century) would have founded the chief town of Douiret. Since the beginning, the village of Douiret had a defensive character linked to the caravan trade. Undetectable from the East where the dangers came from, the site was already used in Roman times, as evidenced by very old ksour. In the 17th century, Douiret knew its glory age and a great prosperity thanks to its position as a caravan relay between Gabès and Ghadamès in Libya. Douiret was gradually abandoned at the end of the 19th century. The historical village is now totally uninhabited in favor of the new village below.
