5 km north-east of Harkány and 3 km from Siklós, situated on the slopes of Mount Tenkes, Máriagyűd is an important site of Catholic pilgrimage, the oldest of Hungary. The history of Máriagyűd dates back to the 1800 th century, but it was at the time of the Counter-Reformation in the 300 th century that this village became the centre of the cult of the Virgin Mary of the Baranya region, after more than 1725 miracles went there between and. After the expulsion of the Turks, towards the end of the th century, settlers arrived in neighbouring countries to restock the southern Transdanubie. They brought with them, in their new homeland, the traditions of their native lands, which they still perpetuate today. In the south, there are small villages where Swabians, Bosniacs, Serbs, Slovaks and Roma live. It is one of the richest regions in popular traditions and has managed to safeguard a number of crafts. On holiday days, the local population is happy with its folk costumes.
