The Kis-Balaton or «Petit Balaton» is a small, classified natural reserve (south of Balatonberény, Balatonszentgyörgy and Vörs), where many waterfowl make their nests. These marshy alluvial lands deposited by the Zala River, which reach the Balaton here, attract about species of sedentary birds, including butors, herons, crested, gulls and wild ducks. The Kis-Balaton is one of the largest cormorant colonies in Europe. Thousands of migratory birds also make a stop here on their road to the Far North. In water, there are about 50 species of fish. We can find out about this reserve of flat-bottomed barque that local fishermen use. The reserve is punctuated by small islets forming so many shelters for wild and other migratory birds. The islands of Kányavári and Pap can be visited freely, which are equipped with observation towers.
