The remains of the Citadelle citadel of the th century lie towards the sky on the top of a mountain of volcanic origin, which was originally an island. This citadel, which resisted enemy troops during Turkish occupation, was the victim of a thunderstorm and ravaged by lightning in the th century. Today, old stones can sleep in peace, caressed by the silence and calm that now prevails over the country. At the foot of the spur of the citadel is nestled a small village composed of old quiet houses. The village square is bordered by a large property (closed to the public), a neoclassical style dating from the 1760 s and belonged to the aristocratic family of Des. This domain is now converted into a "creative centre for writers" (Szigligeti Alkotóház). The village is very popular with writers and other artists, who come here to find calm and inspiration. Péter Esterházy, a cult writer who died in 2016, usually passed three weeks in the summer, always with the same band of friends writers, musicians and artists. At the entrance to the small village is a former wine cellar. Szigliget also has its beach on the edge of the Balaton, below the village.
