Sierpe is the gateway to the Osa Peninsula and its jewels (Isla del Caño biological reserve, Corcovado National Park...). The river of the same name runs through the town. Formed by many curves, it has indeed the appearance of a snake silhouette. People come here to take a boat to go to Drake Bay or to study the largest mangrove area in Central America. The estuary is absolutely unique: the fresh water of the river and the salt water of the ocean offer an array of ecosystems and landscapes that change as you go down the Sierpe. Finca 6, a large archaeological site, opened its doors 5 km from Sierpe, to unravel the mystery of the granite spheres found in the area. Sierpe is slowly opening up to tourism, but two threats are already hanging over it. That of an international airport as in Liberia, which would accelerate the development of the region as it was the case on the north coast of the country. And that of the creation of a national park around the mangrove, which, according to the inhabitants, would lead to the disappearance of their village. If the prospect of an airport does not displease everyone (the land could be sold at a very high price so that large hotels can be built...), the inhabitants all rise together against the classification of their mangrove as a national park. They take care of it very well alone and do not want anyone to come and bother them!
