Alajuela is the closest city to the airport and certainly the most interesting, if visiting the capital is not on your agenda. Many people prefer to stay in Alajuela, which, despite being the second largest city in the country, is much quieter than San José and less polluted. Only 3 kilometers from the international airport, it is a good place to stay for the first or last night in Costa Rica. Especially if, like most travelers, you choose to start your journey towards the west of the country.Staying in Alajuela is also convenient if you want to get to the Poás volcano, which is only an hour away. This volcano has the largest crater in the world and returned to activity on April 7, 2017; it was closed for almost a year and a half until it reopened in September 2018. The vegetation of its national park allows to observe a type of dry flora close to that of tropical rainforests.
