The rainforest surrounding Monteverde is not easily accessible, so the people of this area seek to keep the road to it in its present state to preserve their forest from deforestation (visible at the edge) and, above all, their way of life. About 30 years ago, a group of Quakers from Alabama, attracted by Costa Rica's pacifist policies, moved to this area and established the dairy farms of the Monteverde Biological Reserve. Today, this area is one of the main tourist attractions in Costa Rica, which may have caused a certain "reserve" on the part of the natives who did not settle here to stand on the side of the road counting cars. Most of the tourist establishments are located in the nearby town of Santa Elena, which is now "owned" by tourists, but is still very pleasant. Monteverde is a nice stopover to consider from San José, if you have little time during your stay and you can't go to the more distant parks and reserves. Monteverde will seduce you with the unique and mystical atmosphere of its green and mountainous forests. It is a true natural paradise where you can enjoy the fresh air thanks to the canopy tours, the walks on the hanging bridges or the long silences that will reveal with a little patience the flight of a magnificent quetzal...
