The construction of Los Chiles dates back to the great era of commercial traffic on the San Juan River, the only access route between the Atlantic Ocean and these central regions. Today, about 20,000 people live in Los Chiles, although the city has lost some of its commercial and political importance. In the 1980s, the Los Chiles crossing was closed due to fighting between the Contras and the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. During this military period, American soldiers could be seen along the road. It wasn't until the 1990 presidential election and the return of calm that the border was reopened to tourists. In recent years, companies with American capital have started to intensively produce fruits such as oranges and lemons that flourish on this land reddened by the red laterite. It is a new market, which starts the commercial development of the region. From the road, you can see gleaming factories that stand out a little in the landscape. Investors in search of ideal, inexpensive land are now looking across the border to Nicaragua for impressive acreage. The border crossing in Los Chiles, both for trade and tourism, is thus facilitated. It must be said that the city is located only 3 kilometers from Nicaragua.
