A very small commune, Schwobsheim probably comes from the name of the Swabians (in German Schwaben) who colonized the town, or from the anthroponym Schwabo and the suffix Heim = residence, village. The Rhone to Rhine canal passes a few hundred metres east of the village. Its banks are converted into a cycle path that integrates with the cycle route. In 1953, the priest Zimmermann called upon Joseph Saur, a woodcarver, to represent the 14 Saints Auxiliators in the choir of the town's church, whose construction began in the 14th century.
