The poetess Sappho is said to have been born here in 630 BC. Today, every September, thousands of LGBTQ+ women make a pilgrimage to the small beach of Skala Eressos, in honor of the woman who extolled lesbian love and was considered the tenth muse by Plato. Except for the two weeks of the International Women's Festival, this seaside village has a calm and relaxed atmosphere, where life flows quietly. The small archaeological museum of Eressou, located in the old school of the village, presents some interesting pieces, illustrating in particular the funeral rites and customs of the ancient city.
