This small fishing port, nestled at the bottom of the Gulf of Kalloni, is still largely preserved: sardine fishing is practiced there. In front of the pretty caiques, some taverns serve this fish of Lesbos, to be tasted just salted. The preservation of the marshes of Kalloni, an exceptional ornithological refuge, has allowed Lesbos to obtain the European Natura 2000 label for the entire area of the Gulf of Kalloni. This remarkable ecosystem attracts birdwatchers from all over the world during the great migrations. A visit to the natural history museum offers educational exhibitions on the fauna and flora of the area (www.lesvosbirds.gr).
