Portaria is perched at an altitude of 600m. It is another charming hamlet that flourished during the Turkish rule, when the local silk handicrafts were in great demand in foreign markets. It was also a pioneer of tourism in Pelion. The town houses bear witness to its past grandeur, as does the church of Aghios Nikolaos. Portaria has many springs, as does the nearby village of Karavos, where small waterfalls gush out. It is possible to start the ascent of Mount Pliasidi from here: after about three hours of walking, you will reach an altitude of 1,548 m from where you can admire the surrounding plains.
