Nea Potidae is known for its canal. Built in 1930, it separates the peninsula from the rest of Chalkidiki. The town itself is not unpleasant despite the lack of a beach. It was built in 1922 by refugees from eastern Thrace on the site of the ancient Potidea, founded around 600 BC. By 550 BC, silver coins were already being made here and a treasure trove had been built in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. During the Medieval Wars, Potidea was an ally of the Persians, then of the Athenians, before rising against them and failing in 429 BC. It was renamed Cassandra by King Cassander and flourished.
